  3.   If you're new to the audio thing, perhaps I can help you get going in the
  4.  
  5. right direction.  Basically, you've got two separate things, "soundfiles",
  6.  
  7. and music.  The soundfiles can be anything from a beep or a buzz sound, to
  8.  
  9. thunder & rain, to a car crashing in stereo.  They're played with a soundfile
  10.  
  11. player, "Sound.lha" being one of the best, but there are a bunch of them.
  12.  
  13.  
  14.   You'll hear the term "IFF" associated with soundfiles, and that's just a
  15.  
  16. type of format a soundfile has been saved in.  The soundfile players, like
  17.  
  18. Sound, play either IFF or non-IFF ("RAW") soundfiles, but if you're going to
  19.  
  20. use soundfiles in a program, like DeluxeVideoIII, they'll have to be IFF.
  21.  
  22. To convert a RAW soundfile to IFF, you use a sound editor, either commercial
  23.  
  24. or PD.  The commercial ones do a few more tricks, like saving in stereo, but
  25.  
  26. for just saving a beep sound, a PD editor will work fine.

  29.   Music files fall roughly into two categories, self-playing and MODs.  Any
  30.  
  31. song in the Music section of this board is self-playing, just type the name
  32.  
  33. to run.  The MOD's need a MOD music player, and I guess you should try out
  34.  
  35. EaglePlayer and PowerPlayer, those seem to be the best around these days.
  36.  
  37. "Best" means that they can play the latest stuff, an endless source of
  38.  
  39. frustration in the MOD world.

  42.   As far as making your own music, forget all about Sonix, DMCS, and Music
  43. Studio...they've had their day.  DMCS is trying to revive things with DMCS
  44. II, but it's a lost cause.  Stick with one of the "trackers", like Noise-
  45. Tracker or MED.
